Joe The Plumber Rally - Follow up

Yesterday, the Cobb County McCain campaign folks held a "Joe The Plumber" small business rally on the Marietta Square.  As I mentioned in my post yesterday, I had been invited to speak at the event.

Supposedly, public speaking is the number 1 fear for most people.  Not me.  I love it! Some folks jump out of perfectly good airplanes and think that is fun, which makes absolutely no sense to me. However, this was a little different setting for me so I would be lying if I didn't admit to a case of nerves.

The event was originally scheduled for Friday, but we had some pretty hard rain so they moved it to Sunday. When I received the email promoting the event for Sunday they also mentioned they were looking for folks willing to speak, so I volunteered. Honestly, I wasn't expecting a response.  For some reason I got up during a commercial on Saturday live and went and checked my email. They wanted me to speak for 5 minutes and be there at 1:45!  So I had about 13 hours to prepare a speech and try to get some sleep.

Joe the Plumber Rally

I actually covered 3 different subjects during the speech.

1. I gave my perspective on Senatoar Obama's connections to the key players and positions in Fannie Mae/FreddieMac and reiterated John McCains message from the Congressional record urging reforms for the GSE's.

"....If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation."

Senator John McCain speaking on behalf of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005

2. Of course I spoke about the issue at hand, Joe the Plumber and wealth redistribution.

Here is some of the text. This was not verbatim.  I did ad lib a little bit.

"Taxes ,redistribution of wealth, and class wafare!

One of the simplest and most profound quotes on this is from President Kennedy

"A rising tide lifts all boats"

I want the rising tide, I want some folks to have really big boats.  People with big boats buy big houses! I don't care if their boat is bigger than mine. I do not envy them _ I admire them and try to learn from them.

That is all I ask is that we have a tax system that encourages and rewards investment and growth.

There is a saying that I have heard that plumbers use....

Hot on the left, Cold on the right, Sewage only flows downhill. (Except they usually dont say sewage.  Its usually a little more colorful than that :-) )

Sen Obama told Joe the plumber wants to spread the wealth to help the person coming up behind him.

In my world -It is not right to take commission from a top performing agent, then give it to Senator Obama and the Govt , so he can in turn give it to some non performing agent who isn't making as much!

By Obama's reasoning that is what that agent needs to get ahead.

I want a level playing field.

Sen Obama is proposing a tilted playing field. (at this point I was holding my tilted arm out in front of me)

Remember Hot on the left,

Cold on the right,

Obamas tax plan flows down hill!"

3. And of course I had to briefly make my 3rd point ....If you know anybody that would like to buy or sell a house - call me!

The event itself was interesting.  I would say it was as much or more for the media than the folks in attendance. After I spoke I was interviewed by Channel 46, our local CBS affiliate.

Bob the Agent at Joe the Plumber Rally tv46

He asked me about some of the ideas that I expressed in the speech and then he asked me if endorsements matter to me.

A: No, issues matter to me.

Then he asked specifically about Colin Powells endorsement of Senator Obama and if that made a difference to me since Colin Powell is a Republican and former member of the Bush administration.

A: Colin Powell is an American and he is free to endorse whoever he chooses.

I missed the early evening news and fell asleep before that late news so I didn't get to see myself on TV.  If any of you saw it let me know.

My good friend Scot was there along with his wife Rene. My sister and niece also made it out to the event. We had 2 video cameras there and both batteries went dead! So there are no youtube videos for posterity.

All in all, this was an interesting and unexpected way for me to get involved in the political process.

So what can you do?

Go to John McCain's website and sign up for phone banks. You can call people in your state or a swing state to go and vote for McCain/Palin.  It only takes a minute or two for each call and you can make a difference.

I believe it is a mistake for McCain to spend so much time and resources talking about "small business" owners.  There are a lot more small business employees than small business owners.  The numbers just aren't there, IMO, for owners.  He needs working class voters and he's sending them to the democrats by making it appear that he favors the employer.  But, I could be wrong.

IMO, Powell endorsed Obama because he's African American.  No surprise there.  I wasn't impressed.  Powell is still smarting from his sppearance at the UN.  He's more interested in his own image than about anything.

It will soon be all over.

We've had a graduated income tax system for at least my entire life, and until McCain came up with his last phrase, I never heard it called "wealth redistribution" to tinker with it.  And he knows darn well that's not what Obama is talking about!

And good for you for getting out there to support your candidate!

Great post.  I hate the institutional welfare that Obama wants.  Why work hard?  I should just sit back, relax and let the insitutional welfare take care of me.  Read the post of this person.  She spits venom.  He is probably a miserable human being.  Last time she allowed comments on her posts she had 15 of them killing her.  Now she just spews on her broom. George Bush will go down as the worst President in US History--look at the damage he has done!

Remember when God chose Gideon? God is setting up this elecftion so that when McCain wins, it will be because God won it and not McCain, not men and not me.

Thanks for the features.  I hope that folks will get involved in the campaign.  No matter where you are, there are undecided voters that can be called in your state or swing states. Visit www.JohnMcCain.com to sign up.

I have also gained a new appreciation for how difficult it is for the candidates.  TV interviewed me for probably 2-3 minute and used 3 or 4 seconds of that.  Thankfully, I didnt have a "Joe Biden moment" and it all turned out pretty well.

The news coverage got included inside of a story about Colin Powells endorsement. I was a little ticked that they used my comment out of context, but really it worked ok in the story and my point would have been about the same anyway. Again, it gives me a new appreciation of how difficult it is for the candidates to have the press hanging on every word.

Great job Bob, what a big day!

Lenn- Remember when there was talk in 2000 about Powell on the ticket?  Thank goodness he didn'ttake it, we dodged a bullet on that one!  (note to the left: the word bullet was a metaphor I didn't mean a actual bullet here)   :)
