Whitewater rafting - only about 3hrs from Atlanta.
On July 17, we took the Scouts and some of their family members on a whitewater and camping adventure on the Nantahala river in North Carolina. Depending on where in Atlanta you are leaving from it is about a 2.5 to 3hr drive. We did it as a camping trip but it is close enough that you could leave in the morning, go rafting, and be home to sleep in your own bed. However, there are a lot of other activities in the area and you might choose to make a nice weekend of it. Cherokee North Carolina and Harrahs Cherokee Casino are only about 20 miles away.
The Nantahala river is a fun adventure for just about anybody. As you can see form the video there a people on the river of all ages. The minimum age requirement is only 7 yrs old or a minimum of 60 pounds. We chose Carolina Outfitters, but there are many great rafting companies in the area. A simple web search will bring to many of them. With Carolina Outfitters you can shoot the river with a guide in your boat, guide assisted, or unguided. We chose to be guide guide assisted, but most of the people went with a guide in the boat. (chickens!). With the guide assisted tour, we follow another raft as best we can, and the guide from that boat tells what lines to try to take through the rapids and warns us of upcoming dangers...
