Is there hope for public education?

Can we re invent public education?

Many people, including myself, have been quite willing to criticize the failings of public education.  While there are many downfalls, there are also some bright spots.

I am proud to say that one of those bright spots is my friend and neighbor, Powder Springs resident, Lauren MacDonald.  Check out this great article from today's "Parade" Magazine!

Great job Lauren.. Keep it up!

Coaching Students To Stay In School

The South Atlanta Educational Complex is a vast brick-and-glass building housing 1000 or so 9th- through 12th-graders. While its students look like those from any big-city school district, administrators estimate that about 85% come from families whose income is below the federal poverty line. In addition to getting an education, many of these teens are supporting a child or younger siblings or caring for an elderly relative or sick parent. Some are in foster care, and some are homeless. Others are children of recent immigrants who work long hours and don't know how to help them thrive academically.

Bob - the unfortunate thing is that such out of the box success is not the norm and that our current system not only does not promote such programs but often does everything it can to block them.  For instance, the  Washington D.C. voucher program was providing opportunity and chances for success for many underprivileged students, but, despite the visible successes, it has been stopped by the current congress.

Mike - DC needed a voucher system given their abysmal public school system, but since Fenty took over there has been a significant improvement.

Bob - Congrats on your neighbor's success!!!
