Local Real Estate Comments and Ramblings

Hello, My name is Bob and I'm automotively addicted.  Or so it would seem anyway.  I love cars. Street rods, original classic cars, most forms of racing, exotic cars,  they are all great!

I know that Lane Bailey promotes a large portion of his business as selling garages with a house attached.  I totally understand the concept! My dad collected classic cars while I was young and he one of the finest collections anywhere.  But garaging was always a problem. When we moved to Atlanta -Sandy Springs he checked with Fulton county zoning was was ecstatic to learn they would  allow a 20 car garage!  The neighbors weren't as thrilled as he was, but that is a topic for another blog. Lets just say that 8cylinder Bugatti's with open staight pipes blowing down Riverside Drive didn't go over so well.

Below is an ad that my dad did for Champion spark plugs back in the early 70's

When my folks bought that house in 1969 they paid $88,000 for it.  They added some living space and the garages.  At that time my dad worked in downtown Atlanta and nobody could believe he paid that much for a home OTP (outside the perimeter)!  That house is on the market now for $2.9 Million.  It has been extensively remodeled and updated and the garages are long gone.  I guess the next few owners didn't have any automotive addictions.

Below is a copy from the Atlanta Journal Cobb Extra on a (short lived) automotive venture of mine. it was a long time ago as evidenced by the fact that I have hair LOL.

Anyway growing up around this I have a lot of my own car stories.  I'll dig up some photos and or memories and some more in the future. While I'm on a roll here a few ideas for future blogs.

Today was the 5th Saturday cruise night here in Powder Springs. They keep getting more and more cars for this event and this time they even closed Marietta street to accomodate all the cars!

This event is sponsored by the Powder Srpings "Pushrods" car club. Founded in 1967 the "Pushrods" are the oldest chartered car club in the state.

George and Cindy Narretta have been publishing the "Powder Springs Messenger" since 1993. It truly is our own local paper and they cover all of big news in our small town.  In each issue of the messenger you'll find everything from police and city council reports to classroom news from the local schools to updates on road projects and community events.

The "Messenger" is published every 3 weeks and delivered to over 14,000 homes and over 1,000 businesses in the 30127 Zip code.  This covers Powder Springs and also parts of Hiram in both Cobb and Paulding Counties.

They are fantastic about promoting community events and happenings.  If your school, neighborhood, or civic group has an upcoming event or ongoing program be sure to contact them.  Of course, being our hometown paper it is also a great place to promote local business. Of course the entire "Bulldog Nation" is all excited about starting this footbal season ranked as #1, myself included.  However, UGA football also brings backs memories for me of the funniest thing I ever saw.

My one year in Athens was 1977-78.  I guess one year was all that the city of  Athens and UGA could take of me :-).  Anyway, the football games were always a great experience and a lot of fun.

Back in those days the stadium was quite different.  Both ends of the stadium were open.  On one open end of the stadium was "the tracks". This was, as you can imagine, a railroad track that passed right outside the stadium.  Students and fans would gather on the tracks to watch the games for free.  The railroad had to reschedule the trains for safety reasons.

On the other end of the stadium was "The bridge".  This was a bridge that crossed campus and students and fans would also gather to watch the games for free.

It was the Kentucky game in the fall of '77 and Prince Charles was coming to see a game of american college football.  Yes - that Prince Charles, future King of England.

At halftime Prince Charles went down on the field to greet the band, drill team, etc.....   and then the funny moment .....
some of the crazies on the bridge unfurled a HUGE banner that read:

Seven Springs Museum is located in Powder Springs Park in downtown Powder Springs.  The museum has a ton of artifacts, photos, and historical information about Powder Springs people, historical homes and buildings, and much more.  The museum is staffed by volunteers from the Seven Springs Historical Society.

Music lessons in your home.

Face it -  your life is hectic enough as it is.  Little Johnny has Cub scouts and karate tonight, Suzie has cheerleading practice,  How in the heck are you going to get Sally to her piano lesson????

A lot has been said here on Active Rain and many other places about the elimination of seller funded Down Payment assistance programs and many other "reforms" coming out of the housing reform bill.

OK, maybe I'm a little slow and just now figuring this out, but I went to public school so maybe I have an excuse :-).

With the legislation as it is effective Oct 1 the seller a private individual cannot contribute to the buyers down payment.  However there a multitude of local and state grant programs that will give the buyers a down payment.  The big one around here is called "Georgia Dream" but there are also many others.  The new legislation also gives a $7500 tax credit for buyers. The bond money and tax credit is funded by us!

THE GOVERNMENT SAYS ITS OK TO GIVE AWAY OUR TAX DOLLARS FOR DOWN PAYMENTS!

People are still buying homes for little or no down payment with money that belongs to you, me, and every other citizen but they won't allow people to do the same thing through a private transaction?  Don't get me wrong, I think the state grant programs are outstanding programs for home buyers and I freely recommend them. I like to use whatever tools are available to help people buy or sell a home.
